The Karoo area includes the Northern-, Western-, Eastern Cape and the Free State with approximately 100 towns, settlements and villages, complete with a few thousand farms. There are numerous routes one can take to explore and enjoy the landscape characterised by ragged mountains, vast open spaces and starry skies.

The Great Karoo and the Little Karoo are divided by the Swartberg Mountain Range, running east-west, parallel to the southern coastline, with the former lying north and the latter south of the Swartberg range.

The whole area is known and loved for its sense of timelessness, but it is far from behind the times. Karoo Lamb ranks as a regional food of origin with a certification recognised worldwide – alongside Parma Ham and Champagne.

The Karoo is also one of the world’s biodiversity hotspots and renowned for its wool and mohair (60% of the world’s) production. Recommended places to spend time include Barrydale, Karoo National Park, Kimberley, Klaarstroom, Mountain Zebra National Park, Namaqualand, Riemvasmaak, The Camdeboo, The Swartberg Pass and Victoria West.
